Afghan Safe Arrival Initiative
In 2025, the federal administration gave stop-work orders and froze funding to major organizations assisting refugees. WIN unexpectedly began fielding travel requests from Afghan allies, one of the only populations able to lawfully arrive in the U.S., but the need for support kept growing.
Recognizing the urgency and need to support our Afghan allies, all of whom have bravely risked their lives to support U.S. missions, to lawfully and safely arrive in the U.S. #AfghanEvac, Task Force Argo (TFA), Welcoming Initiative for Newcomers (WIN), and Community Sponsorship Hub (CSH) have partnered to provide a robust and coordinated network of welcome which includes intake, case management, zero percent travel loan, travel coordination, and sponsorship support. With traditional resettlement systems overwhelmed and government assistance limited, the organizations quickly mobilized to fill the gaps.
We’ve worked together to expand and streamline the process to serve Afghan allies. Most of the referrals are families. Many have had to flee on numerous occasions to find temporary safe haven in places like Turkey, Pakistan, France, England, Germany, Japan, Tajikistan, Malaysia, Canada, Doha, and Albania.
This community powered and privately supported end-to-end welcoming infrastructure has proven highly effective. Our work supporting Afghan allies continues to demonstrate that there is nationwide bipartisan support. Everyday Americans are stepping forward to show the value of “welcoming the stranger.”
Together, from the moment our partners receive a referral, we thoughtfully triage each person’s needs. Then we coordinate and deliver a supported welcome to connect our Afghan allies with their loved ones, networks of care, or community sponsorship groups.
